About the importance of the letter “Ё” in Russian language

Nowadays letter “Ё” (yo) going out from the daily life. Even in media you hardly can find this letter. People use “E” (ye) instead. In most phrases Russians can understand, what letter is implied. But depending on this, the meaning could change, in some cases - crucially.

Initially the word "передохнет" in this sentence means "to rest". Correct writing "передохнЁт" (pe-re-dokh-NYOT). But because of the replaced "Ё" - the stress falls to the different syllable and the meaning is totally different - "передОхнет" ("pe-re-DOKH-net"). Remember that "Ё" is always stressed!

Since "Ё" started disappearing, several programmers, who is a stickler for the pure Russian, created program that adds "Ё" to its original place in the text, and called it - Yoficator(Ёфикатор).
